Good morning from New York everyone! First of all, I just want to take a moment to thank all of you who have given Reborn OS a chance on your personal computers. It really means a whole lot to me, and I am truly grateful. For those who have only tried us out in a Virtual Machine and then moved on, still, I thank you. While we may not be what you were looking for today, I sincerely hope we will be that dream tomorrow. But what about those of you curious about the inside workings of Reborn OS? What about those of you who enjoy doing things like using Arch Linux’s testing repo? Well, have I got a surprise for you!
In our last article, you may have noticed that I mentioned Badmem‘s incredible work with us in getting the last ISO all ready for you guys. But then I didn’t go on to mention what he had done? Well, I am now! I had wanted to write up a whole separate article for that, as it will, I think, become its own little topic.
So what did he do? Badmem served as Reborn’s main tester for this last ISO release. He not only built our ISO before we had it out, but he also tested it thoroughly himself in a VM. Then, he told us all about its strengths and its flaws that still needed to be worked out. Due to him and his helpful feedback, we were able to release this ISO days before we would have been able to otherwise.
So how do you fit in to this? Well, I started thinking about how helpful it was to have one tester like that. One tester. And then I thought about how miraculous it would be if we had scores of testers! With this thought, I am asking you – would you like to test Reborn out as well? There would be no major commitment you would have to make, just that whenever you feel like it (and have the time of course) you spin up a VM and give our latest changes a try. Simple as that! If your test ends in errors (as I suspect it will oftentimes when testing) simply either explore it yourself or message Palanthis and I about it on the forums! We would highly appreciate any warning or information you can give about anything.
Interested? Now how in the world are you going to be able to create our ISOs from the latest Reborn code? That part’s not too hard actually! Here are the steps, one by one:
- Install all necessary dependencies:
sudo pacman -S arch-install-scripts cpio dosfstools libisoburn mkinitcpio-nfs-utils make patch squashfs-tools wget lynx archiso --needed
- Clone our Github repository for our ISO recursively:
git clone https://github.com/RebornOS/RebornISO.git --recursive
- Create an
outfolder inside your new RebornISO folder:
cd RebornISO sudo mkdir out
- Build the ISO!
sudo ./build.sh -v
- Text will begin flashing across your terminal, and within an hour a new ISO will pop out in your
outfolder you created earlier, all ready to be tested by you! To build another one, simply delete the build folder in there and run step 4 again.
- Lastly, to update your new RebornISO folder to the newest changes later, simply run this inside the folder to literally “pull” our newest changes from online into your local system:
sudo git pull origin master
- And that’s it folks! Enjoy testing, and don’t forget to let Palanthis or I know how it’s going for you.
God bless, and good luck,
